Paul Berler

Paul Berler

Director

Paul Berler became Music Director of the Chelmsford Community Band in 2001, having served as Assistant Director since 1997. He is the band's seventh music director since its founding in 1972. Since his debut with the band, Mr. Berler has led the CCB in repertoire ranging from Bach, Mozart, and Strauss, to music of Holst, Ives, Grainger, and Sousa. He has also overseen the premieres of music by contemporary composers such as Daniel Bukvich, Michael Annicchiarico, J. Windel Brown, and Ed Roseman.

Paul Berler is also a music tutor for saxophone and clarinet. In his ten years of instruction, he has taught over 100 middle and high school students, with a majority of those students selected to participate in state and regional music festivals. Recently, Mr. Berler has replaced his conductor's baton with the composer's pen. His fledgling publishing comapny, Rooster Hair Music, Inc., will be up and running soon.

Mr. Berler has degrees from the New England Conservatory of Music and the University of New Hampshire. He currently resides in New Hampshire with his wife and two young children.

Timothy Moore

Assistant Director

Timothy Moore has been the Assistant Director of the Chelmsford Community Band since 2003. He is also currently a member of the percussion section of the band. Mr. Moore graduated Magna cum laude from Grove City College with Bachelor of Music in Music Education. Mr. Moore currently resides in Billerica, Massachusetts and teaches in the Billerica and Bedford Public School Systems.

Paul Combs

Paul Combs

Jazz Ensemble Director

Paul Combs has been the director of the Chelmsford Community Band Jazz Ensemble since 2003. He received his earliest musical training in voice and trombone and studied saxophone, harmony and counterpoint as a teenager. Mr. Combs graduated with a B.Mus. in composition from the Philadelphia Musical Academy and earned his M.M. in performance at the University of Massachusetts Lowell. His eclectic career has included performing, composing for theater, film, radio and television, and producing and announcing at radio stations in Philadelphia and Boston. From 1986 to 1999 he worked full-time in music education, which he had been involved in to some degree since 1965.

Currently Mr. Combs is working as a free-lance performer, educator and author. He is heard regularly at various Eastern New England venues in combos, big bands and with his Pocket Big Band. He has a full roster of private students and is listed as a lecturer in the New Hampshire Humanities Council "Humanities To Go" Catalog. As an author he has written for several music education publications as well as Jazz Improv Magazine and is working on a book about the music of composer and arranger Tadd Dameron that will be published by University of Michigan Press in 2006.

This is set up for when the band needs to be quickly notified of a last-minute change in plans, like a rain-out or change of venue. The plan is that Paul or one of the officers (David, Tom, Sue, Carmen) will notify all of the section leaders, who will in turn notify the members of their sections.

Also, if you cannot be at a rehearsal or a performance, and especially if you have a folder in your possession, be sure to notify your section leader or one of the officers.

NOTE

Unsolicited email (spam) to addresses culled from websites such as this is becoming an increasing problem. As a result, it has become necessary to implement the following rule:

In order to use any of the following email links, you MUST include the characters [CCB] (including the square brackets) anywhere in the Subject: line of your message. Any message NOT containing that exact 5-character ASCII string somewhere in the Subject: line will be summarily discarded.

Email Lists

Four email lists have been created under the chelmsfordband.org domain:

ccb-announce@chelmsfordband.org
This list is used to make announcements about band activities to the general public. To subscribe, send an empty email (the subject and body are ignored) to ccb-announce-join@chelmsfordband.org. To unsubscribe, send an empty email to ccb-announce-leave@chelmsfordband.org. In either case, the server will send you a confirming email, which you must reply to in order to complete the request.
ccb-members@chelmsfordband.org
This list is for the internal activities of the band. All band members with email addresses are subscribed to this list, and any band member may post a message to the list. Please use it sparingly, and only for information or requests that are truly relevant to the entire band. Messages must be text only — no attachments are allowed.
ccb-jazz-members@chelmsfordband.org
This list is for the internal activities of the jazz band. All jazz band members with email addresses are subscribed to this list, and any jazz band member may post a message to the list. Messages must be text only — no attachments are allowed.
ccb-board@chelmsfordband.org
This list is primarily for the business of the band board, but anyone may use it to bring something to the attention of the board. Only board members and the band directors are members of this list. Anyone may send messages to this list, but only list members can read them. Attachments are allowed.

Note: On 2007/1/8, changes were made to our hosting provider's email system that require list names to be unique across their entire server. This is why "ccb-" was prepended to each of the list names.

Personal Email Alias

Note that every band member also has a personal "...@chelmsfordband.org" email address that forwards mail to their "real" email address. To find out what your email alias is, just click on your name above. Your real email address will never be disclosed to anyone outside the band without your explicit permission.

This forwarding mechanism has certain filters installed to resist the unsolicited messages from people who harvest email addresses from websites. Currently they are:

  • Any email in which the recipient's address does not appear in the To: or CC: fields of the header is discarded. This means that you cannot BCC: one of these addresses (a common spammer trick).
  • Any email with an executable attachment (characteristic of the Klez virus and friends) is discarded.
  • Any email that mentions the words "million" and "dollars" in that order is blocked. For some reason, the "African money scam" people have been particularly problematic.
More filters will be added as needed. Be sure to let the webmaster know if this service is being abused by spammers, etc. so that appropriate action can be taken.
